I did the same as Pepsi posted and his idea works great. The spikes are secured with a screw through the magnet. They are very handy not only to use as risers for cutting but I mainly use them to line up and square things on the bed for engraving by placing them on the sides of the job. This is especially handy when doing multiple pieces one after another.
My main go to cutting bed is the honeycomb with four runners underneath for better air flow. My second most go to is a 1/4" thick sheet of aluminum plate with aluminum runners underneath and fastened to the plate to keep it all straight. The pins are 2" screws.
Please, Please, if you are going to use ANYTHING that is flammable as a cutting bed base, NEVER LEAVE THE LASER UNATTENDED. All of the old post I made with pictures were lost when our forum suffered a major crash. I lost my first laser, almost my whole shop and thousands of dollars to recoup from this.
Will try to gather and post pics of all later.

Here is a picture of my laser when left unattended for 10 minutes. The ceiling was about 2 minutes from being totally engulfed in flames and the fire and smoke was so intense that I could not get to the fire extinguisher sitting right next to the laser. Luckily I have about 6 other fire extinguishers in my shop. This was using a wood pin bed with 2" nails.

I now use this homemade version when not using the honeycomb.

This is my steel 1/4" bed plate bolted with springs under the plate and threaded bolts to level it. The lines were scored using the laser beam and making several passes to mark the metal. This is one of the best modifications I have made because the lines tell you exactly where square is.

This is the magnetic spikes being used for placement of a cutting board with two more waiting in line.

I also modified my Laser with 1/4 " plate, Springs and magnets with Punk Spikes .... best Mod I have done so far .... I can have my bed leveled in approximately 1 minute or less .... walk away and not have to do it again .... also no fear from flare-ups .... the only thing I use my Honey Comb for now is cutting paper ... I have developed a way to clean the spikes from Glue residue from the BB and my bed I wipe with Goo Gone.

I can try to dig up the springs and Cones I ordered and might be able to take pics if anyone is interested.

Best cleaner I've found for the resin is Zep Purple De-greaser. Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc. I soak my honeycomb in a dog kennel tray, but screws you could just drop in a jar.
