i have been slowly learning RDWorks by myself until now and think that my learning curve is about to get a bit steeper

Welcome Paul. RDWORKS has it's pit falls and it is a not very intuitive but it can be useful. However, there ar many other softwares that are free and do a better job for design work. I only use RDWORKs these days as the interface to my laser.
