Hello from California. I am a "mature" gent with an awesomely supportive wife, a daughter, a son, and three grand daughters.

I have recently gotten interested in CNC routers and lasers, so my wife purchased a small dual purpose kit that can be used for either purpose as my Christmas present. It is small (300mm x 180mm bed with about 45mm z height) and I have no illusions about it being able to satisfy my needs long term. It appears to be adequate though, to learn which aspect of the machine's abilities I like best. While learning and honing my skills, I hope to spread a little cheer amongst family and friends through my projects and possibly find a possible commercial niche to fit into in my area. This would certainly allow me to justify my purchase of a "real machine" of either or both types to the CFO (read that as "wife"...LOL).
I am enjoying Russ' videos and am certainly learning a lot (kind of like taking small sips of water...FROM A FIRE HOSE!). I really like his teaching style, as it reminds me of some of my science teachers in my earlier days and I grasp his information easily because of his delivery style.

I look forward to learning as well as sharing what I've learned when the time comes and I truly appreciate the opportunity that this resource represents.

Thank you all in advance!

Welcome Kevin- it sounds like you have realistic expectations from your dual purpose unit. The truth is that they are both very useful for different things and sometimes for the same jobs- the laser is much faster and does not require all the holddowns in that situation. Have fun. Gene
