Rotary unit connection

Weird question, can a rotary unit be connected to the X axis instead of the Y? I've only seen them hooked to the Y.
I'm looking at a couple of nice units, but they are just tall enough to concern me. I have a nice frame under my honeycomb bed with intermediate support.
But... the support rails run front to back, not side to side. I can make a completely new bed support frame, or I can make a simple under frame support for the rotary to drop down into my current frame and hook to the X instead of the Y... can't I?
The only other thing I can think of is to bring the rotary up through the bed frame and support it while 'straddling' the current frame from from underneath. My luck the piece I would want to engrave would be just the wrong length for that...
