Okay experts, time to fess up.

A buddy of mine saw the latest episode of Gun Stories and saw they used a CO2 laser to do gun stocks. Now he's pestering me to do his dads shotgun.

Anybody out there doing / have done this?

Horror stories or a fairly easy job?

The laser and engraving forums over at Sawmill Creek have some pretty good threads on this subject if you are serious about trying.

That's the problem, he's trying to convince me I'm serious about it. I have no clue on the difficulty / pit falls of it. Don't know if I want to give it a shot, or say hell no.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

I suspect that they use a fiber laser which can better deal with the non-flatness of a stock.

That's what surprised me when I saw the episode. They are using a fiber on the metal parts, but a CO2 on the wood. It does look like they are using fairly flat sided stocks, and a 4" lens might make it doable. At first I thought maybe they are using a bit of a rocker to slightly rotate the stock as it worked like a very slow partial roll rotary, but they pulled it from a flat positioning form at the end of the engraving.
