made a stamp from MDF, apply a lot of force using a sealing press (not sure of translation. "presse de notaire" in french)

the dice tray comes from aliexpress. this is false leather, but it took the engraving unexpectedly well.

Nice work, Sebastien. Can you please give us more details/pictures? Was it a hand operated press device? How much pressure would you guess it required and for how long? I am impressed that the embossed area is so smooth and doesn't appear to show any micro engraving lines in the larger sections of the embossed material. Can you please post a picture of your engraved stamp? Any degradation of the MDF material after a few uses/embossing? MDF certainly would be cheaper than Delrin if the MDF stays intact.

hello,

here's a picture of the stamp. it is 3mm MDF, and at the engraved parts, it is 2.2mm, so the depth of engraving is 0.8mm. i did double pass at engraving to be sure to remove enough matter.

i used a toothbrush to remove scraps of wood on the engraved parts. since it was a test, i engraved at 0.15mm interval so the quality is not very good. at 0.1mm i think it would be better with less junk.

for embossing, i used this :

no idea of the applied pressure (but i would not put my fingers in, the thing is massive and heavy-weight (probably 20 kg)!), i sandwiched the dice tray between 2 planks of wood to apply pressure on the center part. after pressing, it stayed under pressure in place for maybe 2 hours, no idea if immediate release would have had the same result.

the MDF seems not altered but i did only one job. as i do not expect to have to mass-product, it seems effective enough and very low cost.

i'll probably try more intricate patterns now that i see this is feasible.

Thanks for taking time to post more details plus pictures. Your use of wood blocks with the press was creative thinking.
