Speed control for large snail/squirrel cage fans

I am speaking of the fans as pictured above- 550w and 750 watts seem to be most common. They move a lot of air but are very loud and sometimes move way more air than necessary [for instance when engraving]. When very cold [normal here in Minnesota] they pump a lot of heat out too.

I am wondering if anyone has successfully slowed one down- a rheostat would be great but even having one slower speed would be helpful. My backup idea is to plumb a 6" inline fan that would be just in front of the large fan and blow thru it. When operating the large fan the smaller inline fan would be a restriction of course. What are your thoughts? Thanks Gene

I don't see any pictures, but I'm guessing your talking about the blowup bouncy room fans. I have no experience with them, but I do have a large Harbor Freight dust collection system that I have had a 20 amp variac on it to adjust the speed and it works. I did this for the same reason to reduce heat loss.
