Autofocus upgrade?

Hi all

wondering if anyone has upgraded a chinese laser to add autofocus?
I bought a sensor - red pen type that clamps to focus tube..
then realized that the analog Z motor is not going to cut it.
I need to replace it with a stepper and a controller.

just wondering if anyone attempted and where was a goof source for a matching controller and motor to drive the belt?
We are cutting thin wood and acrylic.. and a lot of repetition and hoped it might be faster than the focus block.
but ... also noted comments elsewhere make me question if its wise to try at all? too slow?.. inaccurate?
