My first mod: I added a second air line, so it blows some air even when engraving. This is to prevent gunk bulid-up on the lens when engraving.

To sum up Russ lengthily video: you need air assist for cutting, you don't need it for engraving. Having said that you want some air flow through the nozzle when engraving to keep the lens clean.
There is a switch in RDWorks which controls the air assist on/off.
My lase already has a solenoid valve controlled by the "if blowing" parameter. I only needed 10 $ worth of tubing and fittings to implement this mod.
