Relative to the jigsaw puzzle portion of that instructable, I made a puzzle generator quite a while back (several years). Its on my website and is free (no ads either):

You can choose from various shapes and pick options and parameters to generate an SVG that you can load and use for cuts. Each puzzle you generate can be unique if you choose to randomize the tabs.

if you have coreldraw, there is a $10 plugin for jigsaw puzzles. you can make a puzzle, or take a drawing or photo and make a puzzle out of it. i do like the 3d puzzle!
