I was wondering if I reformat an old sata hard drive and put in a external case, could it be used as the U-disk for a ruida,,would be able to store tons of files and projects.

Store them as an RLD and then you can go back and edit - I don't see the advantage of storing an RD vs and RLD (except a few seconds assuming you use the same file over exactly the same size)
